Is it a condition to verbally state a second person's intention for them to share the reward equally with the first, or is the intention alone sufficient? And if verbalization is a condition, how do we reconcile the use of "if only" mentioned here with the Prophet's (PBUH) prohibition of using it? And is it a condition that both individuals exist at the same time?
The noble clarifies that people are of four types based on wealth and knowledge:
1. One whom Allah has blessed with wealth and knowledge: Such a person fears his Lord concerning it, maintains kinship ties, and knows Allah's right [in it]. This individual is in the best of stations. 2. One whom Allah has blessed with knowledge but not with wealth: This person is sincere in intention and says, "If only I had wealth, I would act as so-and-so does," so their reward is equal by their intention. 3. One whom Allah has blessed with wealth but not with knowledge: Such a person uses their wealth aimlessly, without knowledge; they do not fear their Lord, do not maintain kinship ties, and do not know Allah's right [in it]. This individual is in the worst of stations. 4. One whom Allah has not blessed with wealth or knowledge: This person says, "If only I had wealth, I would act in it as so-and-so does," so their burden of sin is equal by their intention.
Intention is sufficient to attain the reward for one who is unable to act, along with doing what is within one's capability. However, the reward of the doer is multiplied, whereas the reward of the one who merely intends is not multiplied. The word "if" (لو) here is for wishing, not for regret or sorrow, and its ruling varies depending on what is wished for. As for matters specific to a certain time, such as being a companion of the Prophet, the Hadith does not apply to them.
