The answer

The story of Tha'labah is not authentic; the imams have deemed it weak, despite its prevalence among exegetes. Tha'labah was a Badr participant from the Ansar, and Allah and His Messenger bore witness to his faith. What has been narrated concerning him is incorrect. This story has been weakened by Al-Hafiz Al-Iraqi, Ibn Hajar, Al-Dhahabi, and Al-Suyuti.
