The question

What is the ruling on a mawquf report from a Companion concerning an act of worship not established from anyone else, and which the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, did not perform? Does it carry the ruling of a marfu' report, or is it considered shadh (anomalous) due to its contradiction?

The answer

An action performed by a Companion alone, and not narrated from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, is not considered a . This is because following the Sunnah in its essence is more profound than following it merely in the form of an action. This is what led scholars to dispute issues such as the jalsat al-istirahah (resting pause) and the Prophet's descent at al-Muhassab: were they out of preference or necessity? Such actions are considered the Companion's personal (independent reasoning) and are not a recommended Sunnah. For what the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, legislated is what is prescribed for Muslims, and what his Rightly Guided Caliphs legislated was by his command. No one else has the right to legislate or prescribe.
