What is the legitimacy of embracing when two men meet?
Embracing someone arriving from a journey is legislated, while embracing others is disliked. This is to reconcile the narrations reported concerning this matter. In the of Anas, it is mentioned that when the Companions met, they would shake hands, and when they returned from a journey, they would embrace. It is also reported that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, embraced Zayd ibn Harithah when he arrived, and that Jabir ibn Abdullah embraced Abdullah ibn Unays when he met him after a journey. In contrast, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade bowing, hugging, and kissing upon meeting a brother or friend, and instead commanded handshaking.
