What is the ruling on using Indian costus (Qust al-Bahri) to protect against sorcery and witchcraft?

Al-Qust (costus) is a plant used for medicinal purposes, growing in India and China. Its white or black root bark is used, and it is known as sea costus (al-qust al-bahri) or Indian costus (al-qust al-hindi). Ibn al-Qayyim mentioned that costus is of two types: white (sea costus) and black (Indian costus). Both dry out phlegm, alleviate colds, benefit weakness of the liver and stomach, relieve pleurisy, and are effective against poisons. It has been mentioned in several prophetic hadiths, including the hadith (definition) of Anas: "Do not torment your children with pressing (on their throats) and use costus." And the hadith of Umm Qais: "You should use this Indian aloeswood (costus), for it contains seven cures, among them pleurisy." Al-Nawawi stated that physicians have agreed that costus induces menstruation and urination, is effective against poisons, stimulates sexual desire, kills worms, removes melasma, and benefits coldness of the stomach and liver, as well as erysipelas and quartan fever.
