Is it permissible for a woman to work, or is it obligatory for her to remain at home? And in the event that her remaining at home is obligatory, is it incumbent upon the public treasury (Bayt al-Mal) to send her money if she has no provider? And if it is permissible for her to work, is it permissible for her to move freely within the city?

It is permissible for a woman to work, provided she adheres to Islamic guidelines. It is also permissible for her to enter through a wide door if that does not lead to mixing or crowding. The basic ruling is that it is permissible for her to move about in the city with her husband's permission and provided that Islamic guidelines are met. If her going out is considered travel, then it is not permissible unless she is accompanied by a mahram (definition). It is better for her to remain in her home if her expenses are covered, in accordance with the Almighty's saying: "And abide in your houses and do not display yourselves as [was] the display of the former times of ignorance."
