Why was Mecca named Bakkah?

Bakkah is another name for Makkah, where the letter meem was replaced by baa. It is the location of the Sacred Mosque, and its name is derived from "bakka," meaning to crowd or to crush, or because it "crushes" (cuts off) the necks of tyrants. Ibn al-Arabi narrated from Qatadah that Allah "bakka" the people there, meaning He gathered them there. Women pray there in front of men because people circle the Kaaba, and thus some faces would be towards others. Therefore, women must face the direction from which they prayed.
