The question

Is it permissible for a Muslim to shorten their prayers as an emigrant who does not know when they will return to their homeland, or should they pray as a resident? And does the ruling for a traveler differ from that of an emigrant regarding worship?

The answer

"Whoever travels and intends to reside in a country for more than four days is required to pray in full, according to the majority of jurists. As for the duration that obliges a traveler to pray in full with the intention of residing, the most preponderant opinion is that it does not exceed fifteen days.

Ibn Qudamah said: 'If a traveler intends to reside in a country for more than twenty-one prayers, he should pray in full.' He also stated: 'If he intends to stay for four days, he should pray in full; if he intends to stay for less, he should shorten his prayers.' This is the view of Malik, Shafi'i, and Abu Thawr.

As for Al-Thawri and the jurists of opinion (Ahl al-Ra'i), they said: 'If he stays for fifteen days, including the day of his departure, he should pray in full; if he intends to stay for less than that, he should shorten his prayers.'

There is no difference in this matter between a migrant and a traveler for need or leisure. Therefore, you are required to pray in full during your current stay."
