The answer

It is impermissible to take any excess money when making purchases for your employer; rather, it is obligatory to return it to them, unless you are authorized by one who is empowered to do so. For you are merely an agent in purchasing those items. The obligation of returning it is indicated by the of Urwah ibn al-Ja'd al-Bariqi, when the Prophet (peace be upon him) gave him a dinar to buy a sheep, so he bought two sheep with it, then sold one of them for a dinar, and came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) with a dinar and a sheep.
