The answer

Education is not one of the categories for expenditure, as At- (9:60) specifies the eight categories for Zakat disbursement: the poor, the needy, those employed to collect [Zakat], those whose hearts are to be reconciled, [to free] those in bondage, those in debt, in the cause of Allah, and the wayfarer. It is not permissible to disburse Zakat to categories other than these. Thus, education is not among its expenditures, unless the teacher is poor, in which case they would be given from Zakat due to their poverty, not for their work.

The Zakat payer may disburse their Zakat themselves to those who are eligible, whether it is from apparent or hidden wealth. This is recommended for them to ensure it reaches the deserving recipients.
