The answer

has specific categories of recipients that Allah Almighty mentioned in the Holy Quran. If the orphan is poor or needy, it is permissible to pay Zakat to him. Describing someone as an orphan does not mean that he is among the recipients of Zakat, because he may be wealthy. Poor orphans are among those entitled to Zakat, and if the Zakat is paid to their guardians, it is sufficient if they are trustworthy with it. The orphan is not among the categories entitled to receive Zakat unless he is from the eight categories of Zakat recipients. The guardian of the orphan must not accept Zakat if the orphan has enough to suffice him, but charity is desirable for orphans even if they are wealthy. It is not permissible to pay Zakat in installments to the poor, because this involves delaying the Zakat after the year has passed, unless it is paid in advance, then there is no harm in paying it in installments to the poor at that time.
