Is it obligatory to re-issue Zakat al-Fitr in the form of wheat or barley if it was originally given in cash? And does the father negate the obligation of Zakat al-Fitr for his married son if he pays it on his behalf?
al-Fitr is obligatory upon a Muslim for themselves and for those they support, provided it is in excess of their and their family's sustenance for the day and night of Eid. The of the three Imams (Malik, Shafi'i, and Ahmad) is that it is not permissible to give its value in cash, while Abu Hanifa holds that it is permissible if it serves the interest of the poor.
Accordingly, if the questioner gave Zakat al-Fitr in cash, it is considered sufficient according to Abu Hanifa's view. However, if it is not sufficient according to the majority opinion, then the Zakat remains a debt upon them and must be fulfilled in food. Zakat does not lapse with the passage of its due time, unless one was in hardship at the time it became due.
As for a father giving Zakat on behalf of his adult son, for whom he is not obliged to provide maintenance, this is permissible if the son grants permission.
