A patient suffering from an incurable illness may break their fast and feed a poor person for each day, and the amount of the expiation () is one mudd of the staple food of the people of the land. As for al-Fitr, it is obligatory upon every Muslim, young or old, free or enslaved. It becomes due upon breaking the fast of , and it is permissible to give it out one or two days before Eid al-Fitr. Whoever delays it beyond its legally prescribed time without a valid excuse is sinful.
