Is Zakat obligatory upon a woman who owns gold and silver for adornment, neither of which individually reaches the nisab?

Zakat (definition) is obligatory on jewelry. There is no zakat for someone who owns gold and silver if neither of them reaches the nisab (definition) (minimum taxable amount), even if their combined total reaches the nisab. This is because gold is a different type from silver, and one cannot be added to the other to complete the nisab. This is the view of the majority of scholars. Others, however, hold the view that they can be combined due to the commonality of their purposes.
