Dates intended for sale are subject to al-tijara (business zakat) according to the Hanafis and Hanbalis. Their value is assessed, and one-fortieth (2.5%) of their value is given if the business (equivalent to 595 grams of silver) is reached. However, if their value is less than the nisab, zakat al-zuru' wa al-thimar (zakat on crops and fruits) is paid, by giving one-tenth or one-half of it. As for the Malikis and Shafi'is, they hold that dates are subject to zakat al-zuru'. If the dates are the product of a partnership, each partner pays zakat on his share if it reaches the nisab.
