Is it permissible to give Zakat in gold to a poor woman for the renovation of her house?

It is permissible to give zakat (definition) to someone who needs to renovate their house, provided two conditions are met: that the renovation is genuine and necessary, not merely for improvement, and that it is proportionate to the poor person's situation, without extravagance. Shelter is a basic need, and leaving a house unrepaired wastes this benefit. Some scholars have permitted the purchase or construction of a house for a poor person from zakat, citing the action of Ibn Abbas. Abu Ubayd al-Qasim ibn Sallam indicated that large sums given to those in need from zakat have no limits, as long as they are for a necessity such as buying a home for the poor, clothing them, or freeing a slave, considering this to be fulfilling an obligation and an act of benevolence.
