The answer

Tarawih prayer is the night vigil ( al-Layl) in . It was named so because the Salaf (pious predecessors) used to rest after every two or four rak'ahs, due to their diligent effort in prolonging the Qiyam al-Layl prayer, seeking to seize the great reward mentioned in the Prophet's saying (peace and blessings be upon him): "Whoever performs Qiyam (night prayer) during Ramadan with faith and seeking his reward from Allah, will have his past sins forgiven."
