Is the recompense for a man who stole something of negligible value, yet held a great status with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, Hellfire, despite his good deeds?

The hadith (definition) indicates that embezzlement from war spoils is a major sin, and that such embezzlement prevents the embezzler from being called a martyr if he is killed. Ahl al-Sunnah (definition) (Sunnis) believe that a person who commits a major sin—but dies as a monotheist—is subject to Allah's will; He may punish him if He wishes, or pardon him if He wishes, and his ultimate destination is Paradise.
