How do we understand and apply the hadith of Asma bint Abi Bakr, may Allah be pleased with them both, "Do not enumerate, lest Allah enumerate against you," in our financial lives, especially when calculating expenses and saving money, so as to guard against the evil mentioned in the hadith?

The purpose of the Hadith is to encourage spending and discourage stinginess, and it prohibits hoarding and excessive calculation of charities, meaning "do not hoard your money or tie it up with a knot," for Allah will withhold from you as you have withheld. It was also said: "Do not count what you give, lest your soul deem it much, and it becomes a cause for its cessation and your withholding it." As for calculating income and expenses for the purpose of balancing and saving to help with life's necessities, this is not included in the prohibition; rather, it is legally required as a means of economy, and this is indicated by the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "Measure your food, and it will be blessed for you therein," and his (peace and blessings be upon him) saving a year's provisions for his family.
