What is the ruling on a menstruating woman intentionally holding the Mus'haf, and what is the expiation for that?

Part of revering the Qur'an and God's care for it is the prohibition of touching it except in a state of complete purity, based on the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "None should touch the Qur'an except one who is pure." Imam Ahmad and Ishaq ibn Rahawayh affirmed its authenticity. Most scholars have definitively stated that one who is in a state of minor or major ritual impurity is prohibited from touching the mus'haf (Qur'an). Therefore, if a woman touches the mus'haf while she is menstruating, she has committed a sin, unless she touches it from behind a barrier, in which case there is no sin upon her. The expiation for this sin is repentance, seeking forgiveness, regret, resolving not to return to it, and striving to magnify the mus'haf.
