What is the degree of authenticity of the well-known narration from Ma'ruf al-Karkhi: "Remember the cotton when they place it on your eyes"?

This tradition about Ma'ruf was mentioned by a number of scholars, including Ibn al-Jawzi, al-Dhahabi, and al-Dinawari. Abu Nu'aym attributed it to him in Al-Hilyah, and none of those who commented on its chain of transmission deemed it weak or authentic.
