What is the ruling on female circumcision, is it obligatory in Islamic law, and is the law that prohibits it in accordance with Sharia?

Circumcision is unanimously legislated for men and women, though scholars differ on whether it is obligatory or sunnah. It is not permissible to prohibit or ban circumcision. The law can make it optional, with regulations for female circumcision to prevent excessive cutting, based on the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, who said: "Do not cut excessively, for that is more pleasing to the woman and more beloved to the husband."
