Is it permissible for a man to prevent his wife from performing non-obligatory acts of worship, knowing that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade men from preventing their wives from going to the mosque, and how can a Muslim be prevented from his worship by which he will meet Allah, while it is not permissible to prevent a Christian or Jewish wife from practicing the beliefs of her religion?

A husband is not permitted to prevent his Muslim wife from performing her obligatory duties (fara'id), such as the five daily prayers, fasting Ramadan, and the obligatory Hajj. As for voluntary acts (nawafil), a woman is not allowed to fast voluntarily except with the permission of her present husband, based on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "No woman should fast while her husband is present except with his permission." Scholars have differed regarding the ruling on voluntary prayers. Obedience to the husband is one of the means to enter Paradise.
