What is incumbent upon me after I performed the Farewell and Ifadah circumambulations without socks, having wiped over them and then removed them forgetfully?

The majority of jurists—such as the Malikis, Shafi'is, and the well-known position among the Hanbalis—hold that purity (tahara) is a condition for the validity of the circumambulation (tawaf), citing the hadith: "Circumambulation of the House is prayer." Meanwhile, Abu Hanifa and one narration from Ahmad view purity as an obligation that can be compensated for with a blood sacrifice (dam), rather than a condition for the validity of the tawaf.

Accordingly, if it is possible to return to Mecca to repeat the tawaf in a state of purity, that is the obligation, given the strength of the evidence of those who hold it to be invalid. If that is not possible, then there is no harm in adopting the view of Abu Hanifa, which permits tawaf without purity, and this is compensated for by sacrificing a sheep in Mecca to be distributed among its poor.
