What is the ruling for one who committed a grave sin [zina or fahisha] in the daytime during Ramadan at least four times, being ignorant of the ruling, and who does not regularly perform prayers? And is it permissible for him to switch to feeding [the poor] due to his fear of his smoking habit being exposed?

The perpetrator of these two major sins must repent immediately, and make up for and offer expiation for each of the four occurrences. One should not resort to fasting as expiation unless unable to do otherwise, as is the opinion of the majority of scholars.
