Is performing the night vigil (Qiyam al-Layl) the same as the Witr and Shafa (even and odd rak'ahs) prayers, and if they are different, how is each of them performed in detail?

Qiyam (definition) al-Layl (standing in prayer at night) is more general than al-Shaf‘ and al-Witr, as they are included within it. Qiyam al-Layl refers to night prayer in general. As for al-Witr, it refers to the single raka‘ah (unit of prayer) with which one concludes the night prayer, or the prayer that concludes with a single raka‘ah, whether it be three, five, or seven raka‘at. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Al-Witr is a right (or an obligation), so whoever wishes may pray Witr with seven (raka‘at), and whoever wishes may pray Witr with five, and whoever wishes may pray Witr with three, and whoever wishes may pray Witr with one." Al-Witr may also refer to the night prayer concluded with a single connected raka‘ah without a salam (salutation) between the raka‘at. As for al-Shaf‘, it is the opposite of al-Witr; every two raka‘at are Shaf‘. Some jurists specifically apply it to the two raka‘at that precede the Witr raka‘ah.
