What is the ruling on animals that feed on impurities?

The "Jallalah" is an animal that feeds on impurities. This ruling includes any animal that feeds on impurities, such as camels, cattle, sheep, and chickens. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade eating the meat of the Jallalah, drinking its milk, and riding it. Its eggs are also included in this prohibition according to the majority of scholars. If an animal's feeding on impurities is minimal and its primary food is from pure sources, it is not subject to the ruling of the Jallalah. However, if most of its food consists of impurities and the effect of this is apparent in its meat and smell, then it falls under the ruling of the Jallalah and the prohibition applies to it. If this effect is not apparent, then the Hanbali school considers it a Jallalah, while the Hanafi and Shafi'i schools do not. The meat of the Jallalah is not permissible to eat until the effects of putrefaction and impurity are removed from it, which is achieved by confining it and feeding it pure food. The Hanbalis hold that it is forbidden to eat its meat and eggs, drink its milk, and riding it is disliked, whereas the Hanafis and Shafi'is hold that eating, drinking, and riding it are merely disliked.
