A young man about to get married suffers from severe anxiety and high blood pressure when his fiancée is late outside the home. He threatened his fiancée that she would not see him again if her delays recurred, but he later retracted this threat. He asks whether this threat is considered an oath of divorce, and whether divorce occurs if the matter upon which it was conditioned is repeated. He explains that he suffers from severe religious scrupulosity (waswas) and wants to know the Sharia ruling on his issue.

All praise is due to Allah, and prayers and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah. I ask Allah to remove your fears and whispers. Regarding your threat to your fiancée that she will not see you, this does not constitute a divorce because you are not yet married to her, and divorce only applies to a wife. Even if you were to say it after marriage, it would merely be a threat. As for a conditional oath of divorce, the repetition of the condition does not entail the repetition of divorce unless the wording explicitly indicates it, such as "Every time you do such and such, you are divorced."
