What is the reason for the revelation of the noble verse: "And when there came to them a Book from Allah, confirming that which was with them – although before they used to pray for victory against those who disbelieved – but when there came to them that which they recognized, they disbelieved in it. So the curse of Allah is upon the disbelievers," and what is the continuation of the saying of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him: "It does not catch game nor inflict harm upon an enemy..."?

The reason for the revelation of the verse: "And when there came to them a Book from Allah, confirming that which was with them - although before that they were praying for victory against those who disbelieved" is that the Jews used to seek victory through the coming Prophet against the polytheists of the Arabs. So, when the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, was sent from Quraish, and they disbelieved in him, the verse was revealed. As for "al-khadhf," it is the act of throwing a small stone or a date pit between the fingers. The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, forbade it because no game can be hunted with it, nor can an enemy be wounded by it; rather, it can break a tooth and gouge out an eye.
