What is the interpretation of the verse: "Nothing will afflict us except what Allah has decreed for us"?

Al-Qurtubi said in his exegesis of the verse: (Say: "Nothing will afflict us except what Allah has decreed for us") meaning what was written in the Preserved Tablet, or what Allah has informed of, regarding victory or martyrdom. For everything is by divine decree and destiny. Al-Shawkani said that knowing this alleviates calamities and removes the bitterness of enemies' gloating.
