How was verse 240 abrogated by verse 234 in Surat Al-Baqarah, given that verse 234 precedes it, or was the order of the verses based on the ijtihad of the Companions?

Most scholars believe that verse 240 of Surat Al-Baqarah (And those of you who die and leave wives should bequeath for their wives a provision for a year without expulsion...) is abrogated by verse 234 of the same surah (And those of you who die and leave wives behind them, they shall wait concerning themselves for four months and ten days...).

The order of verses in the Mushaf (Qur'an) does not correspond to the order of revelation. Therefore, the fact that the abrogated verse (240) appears after the abrogating verse (234) in the Mushaf does not mean it was revealed later. The arrangement of verses in the Mushaf was by divine revelation, not by the ijtihad (independent reasoning) of the Companions, as indicated by the statement of Uthman ibn Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) to Ibn Az-Zubayr regarding these verses: "O my nephew, I will not change anything from its place."
