What is the ruling on eating from silver utensils or those plated with silver water?
If vessels are made of gold or silver, or plated with either, it is not permissible to use them for eating, drinking, or any other purpose. It is also forbidden to use them for applying kohl (eyeliner) or perfume. The Hanbalis have forbidden the possession of gold and silver vessels, even without using them, and this is the relied-upon opinion among the Malikis and the sounder opinion among the Shafi'is. As for the Hanafis, they held that it is permissible to acquire them but forbidden to use them. The scholars have agreed on the prohibition of acquiring them because what is not permissible to use is not permissible to acquire, and because acquiring them leads to their use. However, if "silver vessels" refers to vessels that are silver in color but not made of or plated with silver, then they are not forbidden.
