Why does the son insist on not attending the Quran memorization circle and neglecting its memorization, justifying this by saying that he used to memorize and lead prayers as an Imam for the sake of his mother, and out of fear of being dragged into Hell based on Hadiths he heard about memorizing the Quran and performing prayers for other than the sake of Allah?
Raising children requires knowledge, wisdom, and patience, and parents are responsible for their charges, as Allah Almighty says: (O you who have believed, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire) [At-Tahrim/6], and as the Prophet, peace be upon him, said: (Each of you is a guardian, and each of you is responsible for his charges.) Neglecting the education of children leads to their corruption.
If the son abandons memorizing the Qur’an because he thinks he lacks sincerity, he should be advised that this is a devilish whisper to deter him from obedience, and that rectifying the intention is better than abandoning the deed. He should not be shunned; rather, compassion should be shown to him, and one can seek the help of a scholar or preacher he trusts to hear advice from.
However, if the abandonment of memorization is due to apathy and a weakening of resolve, the reasons might be: bad company, numerous academic assignments, overburdening him with the memorization program, lack of permissible recreation, or the stage of puberty and adolescence which requires special handling.
The son must know that the whispers of insincerity are a devilish trick to deter him from good. Al-Fudayl ibn Iyad said: "Abandoning a deed for the sake of people is showing off, and doing a deed for the sake of people is polytheism, and sincerity is that Allah safeguards you from both." Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen advised that knowledge is a great act of worship, and that a sound intention for seeking knowledge includes obeying Allah’s command, preserving and protecting His Sharia, and calling to it. He must continue seeking knowledge and not pay attention to the whispers of Satan.
The blessings of the Qur’an are shared between children and parents. The Prophet, peace be upon him, said: (It will be said to the companion of the Qur’an: 'Recite and rise, and recite as you used to recite in the worldly life, for your position will be at the last verse you recite'), and (Whoever recites the Qur’an and acts upon it, his parents will be crowned with a crown of light on the Day of Resurrection). Obedience to parents is obligatory, and acts of worship are for Allah alone.
