Does "or" in Verse 3 of Surat An-Nur mean that adultery is equivalent to polytheism (shirk), and does Verse 38 of Surat Yusuf indicate that Yusuf (Joseph), peace be upon him, described adultery as polytheism?

A Muslim must not delve into interpreting the Quran without relying on the words of scholars or the Arabic language. The word "or" denotes choice and does not imply equality or equivalence. Thus, fornication and polytheism are not equal; polytheism is the gravest of sins. Whoever dies without associating anything with Allah will enter Paradise, even if they committed fornication or theft.
