Are there synonyms in the Holy Quran, and what is the origin of the statement regarding their existence?

Synonymy is the succession of two or more words to denote a single thing, and the sign of its validity is the possibility of one of the words replacing the other without affecting the meaning. Scholars have differed regarding the occurrence of synonymy in the Qur'an; some have affirmed its existence, while others have denied it. The more probable view is that it does not occur in the Qur'an, and what is thought to be synonymy between closely related words in meaning, such as (fear) and (awe), or (devotion) and (humility), is not true synonymy. Rather, there are subtle differences in meaning between them. Synonymy is rare in the Arabic language, and in the words of the Qur'an, it is either extremely rare or non-existent.
