Are the Hadiths regarding the prohibition of purification with the leftover water from a woman's ablution, and those permitting it, contradictory?

Many prophetic hadiths have varied regarding the permissibility of a man purifying himself with the leftover water from a woman's purification (faḍl ṭahūr al-mar'ah) and the prohibition thereof. This has led to some confusion among certain scholars, such as Imam Aḥmad. However, Al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar mentioned that confusion is only resorted to when it is impossible to reconcile the hadiths, which is not the case here. Reconciliation is possible by interpreting the prohibiting hadiths as referring to the water that drips from the limbs (i.e., used water), and the permitting hadiths as referring to the remaining water in the vessel. Alternatively, the prohibition can be understood as a recommendation of disfavor (tanzīh) rather than strict prohibition. As for the hadiths found in the Two Saḥīḥs regarding the permissibility of a man and a woman bathing from a single vessel, they are not part of the confusion attributed to Imam Aḥmad, as he himself saw no harm in them.
