Is it permissible to name a child "Fathallah" given its prevalence among Christians?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

The frequent naming of Christians with a specific name does not mean it is forbidden. Rather, what is prohibited is naming with names exclusive to them or to other disbelievers. Names are of three types:

1. Exclusive to Muslims.

2. Exclusive to disbelievers, and Muslims are not permitted to use them.

3. Common between Muslims and disbelievers, and there is no prohibition against using them.

Naming with "Fathullah" (فتح الله) is not legally prohibited.
