Is it true that Ibn Mas'ud or one of the Companions said: "Had Allah not recounted the story of the people of Lot in the Qur'an, it would not have occurred to me that a man would come to a man"?

The meaning of this statement was transmitted from Al-Walid ibn Abd al-Malik, the Umayyad Caliph, who said: "Had Allah, Exalted and Glorified be He, not narrated to us the story of the people of Lot, I would not have thought that a male would mount another male." This statement was not attributed to Ibn Mas'ud or any other Companion.
