Will the one who is negligent in prayer, yet whose good deeds outweigh his bad deeds, be judged by his prayers or by his good deeds on the Day of Judgment?

Prayer is the pillar of faith, and abandoning it is a grave danger. It is the dividing line between disbelief and faith. Hadiths have indicated that whoever abandons it is a disbeliever, and that it is the first thing a servant will be held accountable for on the Day of Judgment. Some scholars have gone so far as to declare the one who abandons it to be an absolute disbeliever, an apostate in the greater sense, while others have differentiated between one who denies its obligation (who is a disbeliever by consensus) and one who abandons it out of laziness (concerning whom there is a difference of opinion regarding his disbelief). According to the view that considers the one who abandons prayer to be a disbeliever, his good deeds will not benefit him; as Almighty Allah says: "And We will approach what they did of deeds and make them as dust dispersed." According to the other view, whoever's good deeds outweigh his bad deeds will enter Paradise, and whoever's bad deeds outweigh his good deeds will enter Hellfire.
