The answer

Prayer is the pillar of faith and the distinguishing factor between disbelief and belief. Leaving it is considered disbelief by some scholars, and neglecting it warrants the threat of woe. The one who abandons prayer will be held accountable for it first on the Day of Judgment, and he will face worldly and otherworldly punishments such as self-forgetfulness, an evil end, and a life of hardship. The jurists have agreed that whoever abandons prayer out of denial is a disbeliever. However, they differed concerning whoever abandons it out of laziness; some of them deem him a disbeliever, while others believe he should be executed as a legal punishment or imprisoned. The most preponderant view is that the one who abandons prayer should be asked to repent; if he repents, then well and good, otherwise he should be executed.
