What is the ruling on a female gynecologist working in the field of family planning and the financial gain derived from it?

The ruling concerning a female doctor's work in family planning depends on the nature of her work:

1. If her work relates to permanent contraception, or is motivated by fear of poverty, or inability to raise children, or in any situation that does not harm the mother's health: This work is not permissible in Sharia, whether it involves prescribing medication, performing a procedure, or providing medical consultation; because Islam encourages increasing progeny, and the Prophet, peace be upon him, said: "Marry the fertile, affectionate woman, for I shall outnumber the nations with you." The jurists have agreed on the prohibition of sterilization and permanent contraception.

2. If her work is in the field of abortion: This work is not permissible unless abortion is necessary to preserve the mother's life or the integrity of her organs; because abortion is considered killing a soul, and jurists have unanimously agreed on its prohibition, especially after the ensoulment of the fetus.

3. If her work is in the field of preserving women's and children's health and assisting in raising a healthy child: This work is commendable and permissible, and the earnings from it are lawful and good.

The Islamic Fiqh Council, the Permanent Committee, and the Council of the Senior Scholars have issued fatwas prohibiting birth control and contraception and anything that aids therein.
