How can a Muslim simultaneously be shown mercy and be subject to wrath, given the existence of Hadiths concerning the causes for mercy and love, and others concerning warnings and wrath?

Allah is Merciful, and His mercy precedes His wrath. He is swift in punishment and Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. Whoever commits sins, then repents and reforms, Allah will forgive him and have mercy on him. As for whoever commits evil deeds and does not repent, his matter is up to Allah; if He wills, He punishes him, and if He wills, He forgives him. The repeated glad tidings for the obedient and warnings for the disobedient in the Quran and Sunnah cultivate hope and fear.
