How many Muslims were there in the Battle of Uhud, and did they win at the end of the battle?

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set out for the Battle of Uhud with two-thirds of the army after Abdullah ibn Ubayy returned with one-third of the troops. In the beginning, victory was with the Muslims, but they disobeyed the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) command and descended from their positions. Consequently, the polytheists surrounded them and defeated them. This setback was due to their sins, not their obedience. Among its wisdoms are: the testing of the believers and the purification of their faith, so that the Muslim may know that victory and defeat alternate, and for Allah to take martyrs from among the believers, to distinguish the hypocrites, and to annihilate the disbelievers, as stated in His Almighty saying: "And what befell you on the day the two armies met was by permission of Allah, and that He might make evident the believers and that He might make evident those who are hypocrites" (Quran 3:166-167), and His Almighty saying: "If a wound has touched you, there has already touched the [other] people a wound similar to it. And these days [of varying conditions] We alternate among the people so that Allah may make evident those who believe and take from among you martyrs - and Allah does not like the wrongdoers" (Quran 3:140). Just as the victory of Badr was good and a mercy, the defeat of Uhud was also good and a mercy for the believers.
