Should belief in the Last Day, Paradise, and Hell be taken literally or symbolically?

Among the pillars of faith is belief in resurrection after death, and that Paradise and Hell are real and must be believed in. Whoever believes and does righteous deeds, their ultimate destination is Paradise, and whoever disbelieves, their ultimate destination is Hell. Both are eternal and everlasting. The enemies of the Messengers denied resurrection, accountability, Paradise, and Hell, and considered them mere symbols. This is a denial of Allah and His prophets. Paradise, Hell, the Bridge (Sirat), the Scale (Mizan), the Pond (Hawd), the Throne (Arsh), and the Footstool (Kursi) are real matters that we explicitly believe in, just as they have been reported.
