Is it permissible to recite the Quran over the clothes of the deceased three days after their death?

Reading the Quran over the clothes of the deceased is an innovation (bid‘ah) for which there is no evidence. It should be replaced by supplicating for the deceased and giving charity on their behalf, for these two actions benefit them, and their reward reaches them by consensus. Some scholars have held that the deceased benefits from any act of obedience performed by the living and dedicated to them, but the act of obedience must be legislated (mashroo‘ah).
