Is it permissible for a husband to lie to his wife in some cases?

Al-Bukhari and Muslim reported that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "He is not a liar who reconciles between people, for he promotes good or says good." Muslim added a dispensation for lying in three situations: war, reconciliation between people, and a man's conversation with his wife and a woman's conversation with her husband. Scholars have agreed that the intended meaning of lying in the context of spouses is that which does not forfeit a right or take what is not theirs. Scholars differed concerning the intended meaning of lying in this hadith; some went to the opinion that it is actual lying with the intention of reconciliation, while others maintained that it is tawriya (ambiguity) and ta'ridh (allusion). Al-Nawawi mentioned that the intended lying between spouses is the demonstration of affection and promises that are not binding, whereas deception in withholding rights or taking what is not theirs is forbidden by the consensus of Muslims.
