Is there zakat on gold designated for adornment?

Scholars have differed regarding the zakat on ornamental jewelry. The majority are of the opinion that zakat is not obligatory on it, citing the statements of five companions as their evidence. Imam Abu Hanifa and some contemporary scholars, on the other hand, hold the view that zakat is obligatory, based on the hadith of Abdullah ibn Amr concerning the woman and her daughter. There is a third, unverified opinion. It is preferable for one who has the means to pay zakat, in order to avoid disagreement and to consider the right of the poor.
