What is the way to deal with a husband who constantly lies and insults his wife in front of her family, which causes repeated disputes, while desiring to succeed in this life and the hereafter?
Lying is a reprehensible and forbidden characteristic, except in cases where the Shar‘ (Islamic law) has granted concession, which are three: reconciling between people, lying in war, and a man lying to his wife and she to him. The intended meaning of lying between spouses is the expression of affection and promising what is not obligatory, not deception to withhold rights or take what one is not entitled to. If the husband lies in matters other than those for which concession has been granted, he must be advised gently and wisely, and the danger of lying must be explained to him, while being careful to avoid conflict and excessive argumentation, which spoils the relationship and deters from advice. Emphasis should be placed on initiating kind words, being a good spouse, and supplicating for him.
