The question

What is the ideal daily schedule in terms of sleep and wake times? And is it better to wake up for Qiyam al-Layl, then Fajr prayer, and then sleep afterward, or to stay awake? And does morning sleep (nawm al-subhihah) prevent sustenance? And what did the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, do in this regard?

The answer

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, used to sleep early in the night after the 'Isha prayer, and wake up at the beginning of the second half of the night, praying for a third of it and sleeping for the remaining sixth. He also used to sleep during the midday nap (qailulah).

It is disliked to sleep before the 'Isha prayer. Daytime sleep is generally undesirable, except for the qailulah. The worst types of daytime sleep are that at its beginning, and then that at its end, after 'Asr. Sleeping in the morning (after Fajr) prevents sustenance and is harmful to the body.

As for sleeping after Fajr, it is preferable to avoid it. However, if staying awake is difficult, it is permissible to sleep in order to gain strength for work.
