What should a married man do if he is unemployed with two children, and his wife is employed and bears most of the expenses, but she mistreats him, curses him, and curses his family, even though she prays and fasts? Is divorce the solution?

Spouses must live together in kindness. The husband is obligated to provide for his wife, and she is not obligated to spend unless she volunteers to do so. What she earns from her work is her exclusive right, unless the husband stipulates taking a portion of it in exchange for allowing her to work.

If the husband becomes unable to provide for the wife, she may refer the matter to the judiciary and seek separation, but patience is preferable.

Assisting the husband in spending is a commendable act. However, insulting and backbiting her are acts of disobedience, and the prohibition of such acts must be clarified to her. Divorce is not recommended unless means of reconciliation have failed, especially when there are children. Living together in kindness and overlooking minor faults are preferable to separation, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "No believing man should hate a believing woman; if he dislikes one of her characteristics, he will be pleased with another."
